A Liberal's Case for Gun Ownership

For a long time, the NRA has defined the debate on gun ownership. They have declared it a "conservative" cause - that liberals are only out to "take your guns." I argue the opposite: liberals are in favor of personal freedoms - the right to marry whom you want, the right to control your own body, freedom from discrimination. The right to defend yourself is one of those rights - enshrined in the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. One long-ignored historical fact is that "gun control" came about largely from the days when the Democratic Party was the party of racism - to disarm the Black Panthers. Firearm restrictions were put in place to keep marginalized people from defending themselves from abuses of the majority. I agree with the Black Panthers - marginalized people are the ones who need to have personal protection the most! As the GLBT gun-rights group The Pink Pistols says, "Armed queers don't get bashed."
